ECO SUSTAINABLE BOGNER BAMBOO HELMET

Few in the 21st century would entertain the idea of making a helmet out of wood.  Retro and vintage is fashionable these days but why bother with a material associated with the past.  New technology these days usually comes wrapped in stainless steel, brushed aluminum, carbon fibre, teflon or kevlar.  New technology always seems to be shiny.  Natural materials just don’t send a message that the product is cutting edge – or does it?  In Asia bamboo is used in a remarkable variety of products and building activities.

The fact bamboo is one of the oldest building materials on earth has no bearing on its relevance today.  Fresh cut bamboo has an extremely high degree of tensile strength.  It is all at once hard and flexible.  The key to this is fibre length – reaching up to 10mm whereas most wood has only 2mm fibre length of wood.  Many construction sites in Asia continue to choose bamboo for scaffold supports for its strength and lightness.  It is also a favorite material for Architect Kengo Kuma in many of his iconic projects including the Nezu Museum in Aoyama, Tokyo.

For Bogner all of these characteristics add up to make bamboo an ideal material for making skis.  A unique technical characteristic of bamboo is that when thermally pressed it deforms permanently but still maintains its highly elastic characteristics.  This in turn has a positive effect on the long-term stability of the camber when applied to ski construction.

Bamboo not only grows fast but it is also has remarkable characteristics.  Bamboo’s tensile strength is even better than steel —in fact it is unmatched in terms of hardness, flexibility and durability.  It actually makes sense to use in the construction of a ski helmet.  Impact tests with sharp objects on the bamboo helmet produced a surprising result.  The shell crafted from bamboo was more resistant to puncture than high-tech carbon!  Bogner’s commitment to using bamboo has expanded to two additional bamboo helmet versions – one all White and one all Black- that were just launched for the 2015/16 ski season.

What Bogner has produced is a sensational looking ski, helmet and pole set that is all at once retro, Eco, stylish and futuristic looking.  It is no small feat to pull off a product than simultaneously encompasses all of the most desirable traits in contemporary ski design.  It has clear roots in the artisan model of manufacturing with at least some parts created by hand.  Precision in construction combines with magnificent detail and refinement.  It reminds one of the classic leather helmets worn by pilots at the beginning stages of human flight.  Materials in those days were solid and functional – they projected an air of resistance and durability.  Bogner seems to have taken the best of helmet designs of that time and re-imagined them in a contemporary way.   Clever streamlined edges shout speed while the subtle mechanical graphic details impart feelings of security.
