L’ocanda is a family-owned Italian Trattoria (casual restaurant) located in East Village of Hirafu.  It is known to regular visitors of Niseko as a place to enjoy rustic Italian food while basking in the beautiful view of Mount Annupuri.  Run be a team of brothers with the older crafting wholesome Italian dishes and the younger rendering classic desserts.  The emphasis at L’Ocanda is on using the freshest ingredients available and usually sourced within Hokkaido.

Whatever the season in Niseko one can take advantage of the natural beauty of the outdoors at L’Ocanda.  During the day the restaurant fills with abundant natural light while at night the restaurant’s ambient lighting creates a romantic atmosphere – a perfect place to warm-up and unwind after a day surfing the ski slopes.  Fresh flowers arranged throughout the restaurant add a seasonable flair to the inner atmosphere of L’Ocanda Patisserie.  This is a restaurant fueled by passionate owners who embrace all the detailed efforts needed to provide a memorable atmosphere for their guests.

L’Ocanda is not a large restaurant so a reservation is highly recommended for either lunch and dinner – especially during the peak of winter.  For guests celebrating a special occasion their are customized cakes available with advance booking.  At the front of the restaurant is a small patisserie showcase filled with a small range of impeccably crafted pastries and delicate cakes.  Additionally, handmade jams and cookies are all available for takeout and are meticulously made in the shop.

Upon entering the log cabin styled restaurant, friendly staff provide welcomes coupled with endearing smiles – an example of the attentive service on receives throughout a meal at L’Ocanda.  Set menus provide numerous choices of authentic Italian food available at both lunch (1200円 & 1600円) and dinner (5500円). The popular Lunch Course B Menu (1600円) starts with L’Ocanda breads and a farm fresh salad followed by a generous portion of pasta.   A delicious dessert completes this incredible value meal.

The food served at L’Ocanda typifies the slow cooking in Toscana resulting in rich sauces of meat, vegetables or cheese.  Pasta dishes often found on the L’Ocanda menu include deep flavored gobo (Japanese burdock),  slow braised beef cheeks in red wine, penne with hotaru ika (firefly squid) in tomato sauce and handmade gnocchi.  The gnocchi is everything one could desire.   A simple looking dish upon first glance evolves on first bite into something much more profound.  Slow-stewed chunks of melting tuna bathing in a rich mushroom cream sauce envelope the pillow-soft potato gnocchi.  The lines between Italian and Japanese cooking become blurred by the fact the ingredients are from Hokkaido and the finesse of the cooking is perhaps closer to Japanese.  Whatever the analysis the result is a simply stunning dish that will leave you with a fine memory and a taste memory that will lure you back for more.

When first entering the L’Ocanda Italian Niseko ones eyes are quickly drawn to the lit showcase filled with colorful renditions of classic desserts.  The style is more French than Italian with a consistent line-up of great pastries available throughout the year.  Tarte Fruits (fruit tart) , Saison du Gâteaux (strawberry shortcake) and Marron Mont Blanc (Creamy Chestnut with rum) are a few of the standard frequently found here.  The younger brother’s classical training really shines through in some of the more seasonal creation he offers.  Whether you eat in or wish to takeout for your own aprés ski party at your chalet – the L’Ocanda Patisserie selection will impress visually and gastronomically.

The restaurant performs well at pairing wines to the food for guests who would like to enjoy wine together with their meal.  It is one of the reasons behind the owners of L’Ocanda keeping the menu small – it allows them to make pairing easier while working within a seasonally operated restaurants budgets.  This is a rare quality to find in Niseko and exists presently at only a few more prestigious restaurants with much higher prices.  Wine connoisseurs will be pleased by the quality selection of primarily Italian wines offered.  Wines range in price from 2600 to 7500 with Sapporo Yebisu beer offered on draft and a variety of soft drinks also available.
