NISEKO NORTHERN RESORT ANNUPURI
Niseko Northern Resort Annupuri opened in 1985 at a time few outside of Hokkaido had heard of Niseko Ski Village. The Hotel’s design is best described as Northern European with a “Lodge” ambience anchored by a unique fireplace for guests to relax around. Situated right at the base of Mount Annupuri it represents one of the best ski-in-ski-out locations in Niseko. No other hotel offers such a seamless integration of skiing and accommodation which helps to explain its continuing popularity. If close proximity to the ski hills is the top priority then the Niseko Northern Resort Annupuri is at the top of the list.
Within the hotel, 152 rooms fully equipped with modern furnishings offer eye-pleasing panoramic views of Mount An’nupuri. Guests with an extended stay will appreciate the open access to a relaxing WIlderness Library with its extensive stock of reading materials and comfortable lodge decor.
For relaxation and beauty full services are offered at the Esthetics Salon including body care, facial and special detoxifying therapy with advanced reservations. The Esthetic Salon is open from 2 pm until 10 pm except on Wednesdays.
RESTAURANTS & CASUAL DINING
Breakfast rates as one of the best features of Northern Resort with high marks given for both the variety of food and its quality coffee service. Lunch is served from the same restaurant with a buffet-style service. Dinner choices broaden to include a choice of a buffet at Restaurant Éclat, seasonal Japanese food in Restaurant Au-Non or casual fare at the Pinnacle Cafe. At Restaurant Au-No dinner centres around an 8 course Kaiseki dinner creatively prepared each day to celebrate the season with ingredients carefully sourced from the best of Hokkaido produce. Matched with an extensive range of local sake and wine this meal offers a considerable upgrade from the casual fare offered at the hotel’s other two restaurants.
Guests wishing to broaden their eating choices have some of Niseko’s best dining options within walking distance of the hotel. These include Pizza del Sole and Sobatei Rakuichi. Late night cocktails are available in the memorable Forester Lounge which centres around an impressive fireplace and offers panoramic mountain scenery views. Guests hoping for an exciting nightlife would be better served in Hirafu as although An’nupuri has 2 of the best food venues in Niseko it certainly has fewer choices.
Additional facilities include Japanese Karaoke entertainment & conference rooms for business or presentation requirements. Niseko United ski shuttle service is regularly throughout the day and has improved dramatically over the past year in terms of frequency and convenience. Souvenirs can be purchased at the Northern Gift Shop located just inside the main hotel entrance.
It is perfectly suited for groups of dedicated skiers or snowboarders whose priority is convenience and proximity to ski access facilities. Families with small children will also appreciate the Powder Company ski school located between the Hotel and the ski lifts. Here there is no need to load equipment or travel far because everything to do with a ski holiday is just outside the door.
One issue with this hotel that has been mentioned online is the undesirable noise created in the corridor by the opening and closing of heavy metal doors in the corridors near exits. Guests would therefore be advised to request a room near the end of the corridor. This problem would of course be amplified in the peak season months of January and February.
Although the Niseko Northern Resort Annupuri is not the newest hotel, it offers considerable advantages for travelers with skiing or snowboarding foremost on their minds. Northern Resort is best suited to travellers in small to large groups focused primarily on skiing. Those seeking a high level of service, ambience and privacy are better served in a ryokan or smaller inn.
