EXTREME ALPINE DESCENT PROTECTION – THE NORRONA LYNGEN DOWN JACKET

The Lyngen Alps rise sharply out form the spectacular terrain of the fjords in northeast Norway.  This unique landscape and the challenging microclimate they are home to provided the inspiration for Norrona’s Lyngen line of backcountry outerwear and insulation pieces.  They offer the breathability and flexible venting options required for taxing aerobic ascents.  Additionally,  Lyngen outerwear provides all the protection you need for the more treacherous snowy descents in the challenging backcountry.

At the base of the towering peaks of Lyngen one can set a base camp at the edges of ancient glaciers.  Here the landscape is relatively unmarked by human activity – a northern oasis of the modern world.  As Northern lights dance across the canvas created by  a black night sky,  frigid and frosty night air laps against exposed body parts uncovered by the protective warmth of a down sleeping bag.  When the snow stabilizes for two straight days – free of avalanches – this is the place to experience one of northern Europe’s finest alpine descents.

NØRRONA LYNGEN DOWN JACKET

The Norrona Lyngen Down Jacket has a high warmth-to-weight ratio and is a full 100 grams lighter and 25% warmer than the previous year’s model.  With a High-Loft 750-down fill insulation the entire body will feel warm even in extreme cold weather conditions.  The jacket’s exterior is made of a water-resistant fabric to shield the user from melting ice or fresh falling snow.  750-Down fill insulation throughout is not only exceptionally warm but also light-weight – important for longer treks or scaling tall peaks in the backcountry.  Even better is it compresses down into a small size for long-distance trips across the world and into extreme geographical locations.  Lyngen Lightweight Down™750 is super lightweight and compressible, weighing only 325 grams (actual down weight of 185 grams).  Norrona uses a more advanced “box wall” construction when insulating their jackets.  Side walls between the outer shell and inner lining eliminate “cold lines” of stitching, maximizing the garment’s thermal effect.

To make long treks more comfortable Norrona added a smooth outer and inner lining allowing that can be added or subtracted – thereby making layering easy.  One can slip a weatherproof shell on top of this jacket should weather conditions become particularly difficult making.  Well thought out locations for pockets give plenty of storage to stash a mobile phone, money, keys or other winter necessities like lip balm.  Thoughtful design is one of the areas Norrona excels in – a point that means a lot when you are at the mercy of nature’s extremes.  A 5 year warranty gives the buyer reassurance that this jacket won’t fall apart.

WHY DOWN INSULATION?

Norrona chooses to use down because when it comes to insulating jackets down remains the overall top choice.  Natural down is both more compressible and has a higher warmth-to-weight ratio than even the best synthetic insulation.  The only condition Norrona considers a valid alternative to using down is in extremely wet conditions when a wet down will compress and lose its valuable thermal qualities.  For wet conditions, PrimaLoft One synthetic insulation can now get quite close to the performance of down.  It does not not provide the same amount of insulation for the weight and the space it takes up in a trekking backpack however it is the better option in wet weather.

Norrøna claims  a progressive policy towards the humane treatment of animals used in their products and the reduction of environmental damage wherever possible.  According to Norrona they use only the highest available down quality which is a by-product of the food industry – as opposed to down form animals killed only for insulation.  This is standard practice for modern outerwear manufacturers.  Norrona down is sourced from the Pyrenees Mountains in France where the treatment of birds complies with strict European standards and the highly specialized washing of the down passes the Oeko-Tex 100 standards.
