THE BARN BISTRO NISEKO BY ODIN
Inspired by the distinct shape and structures that dot the rural countryside of Hokkaido, the Barn Restaurant by Odin is a refined twist on a traditional Hokkaido farm barn. Located in the Hirafu pension village, the Barn Bistro is a casual upscale dining experience in central Niseko. Steel framing allows rises to form a folded geometric ceiling that appears to be a side of an incomplete hexagon. Framed by towering floor to ceiling windows creates an open feel to the interior space and permits the amber lighting to escape into the street, enveloping those passing by on a cold winter’s night into her warm embrace. Dramatic lighting created by the distinctive Denmark-designed Caravaggio lamps which add an eye-pleasing focal point to an otherwise minimalist space.
The main floor is somewhat of a fusion of French alpine bistro and Scandinavian minimalism. An upstairs mezzanine bar is perfect for an aperitif or, later-on, a nightcap to end the day.
Contrasting the black steel frame, blond plywood panels lighten and enrich the dining space with warmth. The Barn also provides in-house dining and private breakfast for guests of next door Kimamaya Hotel.
From the outside it really does look like a barn, an outline that will surprise on first encounter before its subtle refinements wins over even the most stubborn aestheticist. It certainly adds much need character to a lower Hirafu village otherwise filled with either cheaply built lodges that pre-date the recents boom, or cloned modernist monstrosities.

The Barn serves seasonal alpine food and wine in a warm bistro setting. A locally inspired menu rooted in French classical cooking combining the best techniques of France with Hokkaido’s extraordinary vegetables, meats, and seafood. Signature dishes include foie gras terrine, crab rillette, duck parmentiere, scallop fricassée and coq au vin. Bread is baked either in the restaurant or at the Odin bakery & creperie.
The Barn Bar features wines from the owners’ Boyer-Gontard vineyards in Burgundy, France. They include an enchanting Crémant de Bourgogne sparkling wine of which the Boyer-Gontard family were the first to introduce in 1836. The whites are typical of those made in the Burgundian terroir including a standout Meursault Perrieres 1er Cru that displays remarkable depth and finesse on the palate along with the usual minerality. For experienced connoisseurs, The Barn also has an impressive list of familiar producers spanning the globe geographically.
